Using cutting-edge technology and information based on the best research available, we help you attain better health by unlocking the power of actionable genetic insights.

Research has shown that your genes affect how you respond to your surroundings and experiences. Tiny variations can affect how your muscles form and behave, how your body uses the major food groups and whether you are likely to lack certain vitamins or minerals.

What is DNA?

Your DNA is made up of genes that provide the recipes for proteins our bodies make. The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). DNA bases pair up with each other, A with T and C with G, to form units called base pairs. In the nucleus of each cell, the DNA molecule is tightly packaged into thread-like structures called chromosomes.

What is a SNP?

Single nucleotide polymorphisms, frequently called SNPs (pronounced “snips”), are the most common type of genetic variation among people. Each SNP represents a difference in a single DNA building block, called a nucleotide. For example, a SNP may replace the nucleotide adenine (A) with the nucleotide thymine (T) in a certain stretch of DNA.

Most SNPs have no effect on health or development. Some of these genetic differences, however, have proven to be very important in the study of human health. Researchers have found SNPs that may help predict an individual’s response to certain drugs, susceptibility to environmental factors such as toxins and even an individual’s response to nutrients and exercise.
